Kojic acid is an organic compound, derived from a fungus and a by-product of fermenting rice, soy, and sake, a Japanese rice wine.
Why Is Kojic Acid Used?
The main purpose of Kojic acid is to reduce melanin production by blocking the enzyme “tyrosinase”. Melanin is a natural pigment that adds color to eyes, hair and skin. Dark spots or hyperpigmentation occur due to excessive secretion of melanin. When melanin formation slows down, dark spots lighten giving even tone to the skin. Kojic acid works to lighten dark spots and reduce pigmentation.
